While my professional experience is valuable in knowing how county school systems are supposed to work, I believe the most valuable skills in serving on a school board are the same skills most learn in elementary school:
Of utmost importance to me is that I lead by example so our children can see respectful leadership in action.
~ Rob Wheeler, Candidate for Sumner County School Board District 5

Serve effectively by being respectful of all others, even if I disagree; look at the schools as a whole and avoid the single-issue trap; critically evaluate each decision and listen to others to arrive at the best solution for the students, teachers, schools, and the community.
I believe one of the strongest assets a board member can have is to allow the professional educators to do their jobs. They are the ones who are trained and educated to be educators. They are the ones who handle the day-to-day operations of schools and classrooms, facilities and children, parents and governmental rules and regulations coming from all directions. Within the guidelines and policies of the school board, I believe the fine educators serving Sumner County Schools should be allowed and encouraged to do what they first sought to do – teach children to be the best they can be.
